Have you been experiencing stabbing pain in your shoulder each morning lately? If this has been happening even though you haven’t sustained an injury to your shoulder joint recently, then the problem most likely stems from your sleeping posture.

How Does Your Sleeping Posture Lead to Shoulder Pain?

We’ve all heard about the importance of maintaining a healthy posture as we go about our daily activities, be it while we’re sitting, standing, or walking, the position we carry our body in impacts our musculoskeletal system. This applies to the position we sleep in as well.

Certain sleeping postures and positions can put additional strain on our shoulder tissue, causing us to wake up with an aching shoulder. If you continue to sleep in this position, then the pain and stiffness is likely to worsen.

For instance, by sleeping in a posture in which your spine isn’t in a neutral position, you can end up exerting excess stress on the shoulder muscles as well as the cervical spine. Similarly, if you always sleep on your side with your arms stretched out, you’re restricting the circulation to your shoulder. This can result in stiffness and soreness in your shoulder and forearm, as well as put pressure on your nerves. You may even develop a shoulder impingement syndrome or tendinitis because of this.

So, how can you fix this?

Sleep On Your Back

Ideally, sleeping on your back is the best posture to adopt. It helps you evenly distribute the weight across your body, minimizes chances of additional pressure being exerted, and ensures correct alignment of your spine, muscles, tissues, and internal organs. This prevents shoulder pain and stiffness from reoccurring.

Switch Up Sides

If you must sleep on your side, however, then try to alternate to avoid one side of your body bearing all the weight every day. Alternating your sleeping sides will allow you to prevent muscle imbalance and pain in your shoulder joint.

Use the Right Mattress

Sometimes, it’s the mattress that’s at fault. If you have a mattress that’s too firm or too lumpy, it’s time to buy a new one that’ll prevent you from hurting your shoulder while you sleep.

An adequately firm yet soft mattress will give your shoulder joint the support it needs, especially if you sleep on your sides.
