Stem cell therapy has been around for a while, but do you know the techniques used? This blog will cover 3 types of regenerative injections used for an autologous (your own cells)procedure.
Bone Marrow Derived Autologous Concentrate (BMAC)
Bone marrow has long been used as a source of human stem cells. Human bone marrow has a natural supply of multipotent stem cells, which can be harvested for tissue repair and regrowth.
The mononuclear cells of the bone marrow are separated and centrifuged to be injected into the individual again after having been carefully concentrated. This process of extracting a small part of the bone marrow instead of removing it along with the bone is called bone marrow aspiration.
Adipose Derived Stem Cells (ADSC)
In this injection, the patient’s stem cells are derived from the adipose (fat) tissue and are combined with platelet rich plasma (PRP) to create an effective biological therapeutic blend.
Because the stem cells are more abundant in adipose tissue than they are in the bone marrow (100-1000x more per gram), this is an especially useful way of extracting stem cells for regenerative injections. Adipose derived cells are able to further divide and differentiate into many different types of cells, which is helpful for musculoskeletal healing.
Following a liposuction procedure, the adipose sample is thencleaned and concentrated. Next, the fat sample is added tothe individual’s platelet rich plasma (PRP). Finally, the mixture isinjected into the patient’s body.
There is no risk of immune rejection as the patients receive their own cells. Research has shown Mesenchymal stem cells to be able to proliferate into various types of cells.
Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP)
PRP is another autologous therapy which involves deriving blood from the same individual to stimulate the body’s natural healing process. Once the blood is drawn, it is spun in a centrifuge to separate out growth factor rich platelets. The platelet rich plasma is then injected into the affected area.
Patients may sometimes feel soreness after the treatment. This is an indication that the healing process has begun, and reduces as tissue repair occurs. The platelets release many different proteins that help in regeneration of tissues, and PRP may be used to address chronic and severe injuries especially among athletes.
