Using PRP for Treating Shoulder Injuries

Shoulder injuries can be a nuisance. Resulting from damaged tendons, muscles, cartilage and bones of the shoulder, these aren’t just painful but also result in loss of strength and flexibility.

Usually, the way to go about shoulder injury treatment was through physiotherapy, or, in extreme cases, surgery. However, this doesn’t have to be the case anymore. With platelet rich plasma injections, you can now get a non-surgical treatment for many shoulder injuries that may not be responding to physiotherapy that is quicker and easier, than surgery, with far less potential risks and complications.

How PRP Therapy Works

Platelet rich plasma therapy (PRP therapy for short) works in a unique way. First, we draw a blood sample; about 15–60 cc worth, depending on system used and amount of PRP required. The blood plasma is then centrifuged to separate the platelets from the other blood cells. These platelets are then injected at the site of the injury (in this case, the shoulder) for the treatment to kick in.

Since PRP is a natural component derived from the individual’s body, the procedure is an autologous one. The essential growth factors present in the PRP help stimulate a natural healing response and repair damaged   tissues.  Since the PRP concentration being injected contains between 2–6 times the number of platelets than the normal amount, the recovery process is sped up.

What makes this such an effective option is the fact that high concentrations of PRP can be injected directly at the injured point on the shoulder. As a result, PRP reaches the region where it’s needed the most, without really affecting surrounding areas—unlike in surgery.

For instance, if you’ve suffered trauma to your shoulder, then the PRP component can be injected directly at the damaged ligaments and tendons. In doing so, it accelerates the healing process, improving shoulder mobility and reducing pain and discomfort. As a less invasive procedure, it also has minimum risks and stimulates tissue regeneration. You’ll notice results not long after your treatment and be back on track in no time!
