Adipose Derived Stem Cells and Musculoskeletal Injuries

Bone marrow is typically considered to be the ultimate source of obtaining autologous stem cells. However, the adipose tissue, too, contains a high concentration of stem cells that may be used to treat musculoskeletal conditions and injuries.

Adipose Derived Stem Cell (ADSC) Therapy

When it comes to harvesting stem cells, the adipose tissue is an extremely rich source of these amazing cells. Adipose has a 100–1000 times greater concentration of stem cells as compared to bone marrow. Along with the other types of regenerative cells already present within the fat tissue, the high concentration of stem cells helps stimulate the natural healing process. This makes adipose tissue an optimal site for harvest.

In order to obtain stem cells from the fat tissue, a small portion of fat is removed from the patient’s flank, thigh, abdomen, or buttock. This is done through liposuction, and   30-60cc of fat is extracted for further use. Since only a small amount of fat is harvested in this procedure, the usual risks otherwise applicable to liposuction aren’t of any concern here.

The stem cells obtained are then mixed with the platelet-rich plasma that has been extracted by centrifuging a sample of the patient’s blood. Once the two components are combined, the new mixture contains a number of regenerative cells and growth factors. This is then directly injected at the affected site to kick-start the healing process.

Using ADSC Therapy for Musculoskeletal Injuries

Stem cells derived from the adipose tissue are capable of differentiating and proliferating into several different types of cells. This makes them especially useful for treating musculoskeletal ailments and injuries, as they promote tissue healing and cartilage regeneration.

Studies have pointed out the effectiveness of ADSC treatment for musculoskeletal disorders. Through their ability to differentiate, the adipose derived stem cells act as therapeutic agents when it comes to muscle repair and ligament healing. ADSC are  widely used to  stimulate the regrowth of bone tissue and cartilage, as well as tendons and muscles
