3 Facts You Didn't Know About Platelet Rich Plasma Therapy
Platelet Rich Plasma therapy, or PRP, has emerged as one of the more innovative forms of treatment for musculoskeletal problems and is especially useful for reducing inflammation and promoting soft tissue healing.
While the procedure has been in used by doctors for quite a few years now, there still appears to be some scepticism regarding it. Here are a few facts about PRP procedures you probably did not know about.

It Is Very Effective

Studies have found that Platelet Rich Plasma therapy is very effective in reducing pain and inflammation, and healing tissues.

A meta-analysis done in 2017 analysed 14 controlled trials which had 1,423 participants. Researchers found that PRP was extremely effective in lowering pain for people who had knee osteoarthritis. Not just that but it also improved the physical functioning of patients significantly, which was observed in their follow up visits.

Another study published in 2014 looked at the effects on individuals who received multiple PRP injections for treating chronic patellar tendinopathy, which is an injury of the knee. It was discovered that after receiving three rounds of injections, the symptoms were significantly reduced and the patients reported better physical functioning.

It Is a Time-Efficient Procedure

The procedure itself is quite short and does not take a lot of time. The doctor first draws around 2060 cc of blood from the patient's arm. The blood sample is then placed into a centrifuge and spun for about 515 minutes. This is done so that the different components of blood may be separated for further use.

It Is a Time-Efficient Procedure

Running the blood through the centrifuge separates it into red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets. The latter are extracted from the sample to be used for the procedure. Having obtained the PRP, the doctor numbs the site of treatment and the platelet rich plasma is injected into the area. The patient is then asked to rest for 1015 minutes before getting discharged. Thus, the procedure is a short and concise one and typically takes 3060 minutes for completion.

It Has Minimal Side Effects

Since PRP treatment uses a person's own blood for the process, there is very little chance of the procedure having any unpleasant side effects. Having your own platelets injected eliminates the chances of internal incompatibility or the body rejecting the plasma, and instead increases the likelihood of the procedure being a success.
Patients can typically resume their everyday activities as usual without having to take any extra precautions. In fact, they may go about their day normally after being discharged from the clinic. Sometimes, however, a patient may feel pain or irritation at the injection site, but this goes away after a little while and the doctor can guide them what to do should such a situation arise.
